Now for something completely different!

John Dove is recorded in the Glasgow 1838/1839 Post Office Trade Directory
as a Basket Maker at 3 Charlotte Lane.

Charlotte Lane ran between St. Andrew’s Square and London Road.

The only John Dove found on the 1841 Census (transcriptions) in the immediate area was as follows:

Living at St. Andrews Square, Glasgow
Donald Dove, age 33 Basket Maker, born c1808, Lanarkshire
Isabel Dove, age 31, born c1810, Lanarkshire
John Dove, age 5, born c1836, Lanarkshire
Janet  Dove, age 1, born c1840, Lanarkshire

The above Donald Dove married Isobel Anderson at Glasgow
On 26th August 1831 (IGI)

By 1851, the family had grown

Donald Dove, Head, age 42 Basket Maker, born c1809, Glasgow
Isabella Dove, Wife, age 40, born c1811, Glasgow
John Dove, Son, age 14, Basket Maker, born c1837, Glasgow

Donald Dove, Son, age 9, born c1842, Glasgow
Mary Dove, Daughter, age 3, born c1848, Glasgow
Thomas Dove, Son, age 1, born c1850, Glasgow

1861 Census

Donald Dove, Head, age 54, Basket Maker, born c1807, Glasgow

Mary Dove, Daughter, age 14, Scholar, born c1847, Glasgow
Thomas Dove, Son, age 11, Scholar, born c1850, Glasgow

The above listings are from the 1863 Glasgow Post Office Directory and quite clearly show
that there was a Donald AND a John Dove, both involved in the basket trade in one way
or another, so they may have been related although no research had been carried out
to either prove or disprove this.

As can be seen in the above listing from the 1876/87 Post Office Directory,
it appears that father and son, John Dove Senior and Junior included into their wares
‘Perambulators’

John Dove junior married Ann (or Annie) Scaling c1865 and by 1881 were living
at Rosslyn Terrace, Nithsdale Road, Glasgow

John Dove, Head, age 46, Basket & Perambulator Manufacturer

Sarah Dove, Daughter, age 15, Scholar, born c1866, Glasgow
William Dove, Son, age 13, Scholar, born c1868,Glasgow
Isabella Anderson Dove, Daughter, age 10, Scholar, born c1871, Glasgow
John Dove, Son, age 7, Scholar, born c1874, Glasgow

His younger brother James had also married and in 1881
was living at 60 Abbotsford Place, Glasgow.

James Dove, Head, age 38, Basket & Perambulator Manufacturer
(employing 6 men, 3 boys & 5 girls), born c1843, Glasgow

Isabella Dove*, Daughter, age 1, born c1880, Glasgow

*Isabella Dove is subsequently found living with aunts and uncles
in 1891 and 1901, perhaps her parents both died young.

Also in 1881, the remainder of John’s siblings are found living at
Monteith Row, Glasgow – all appear unmarried.

Janet L. Dove, Head, age 41, Income from Property, born c1840, Glasgow
Donald Dove, Brother, age 38, Income from Property, born c1843, Glasgow
Mary L. Dove, Sister, age 34, Income from Property, born c1847, Glasgow
Thomas A. Dove, Brother, age 31, Basket Manufacturer, born c1850, Glasgow

In almost every Glasgow Post Office Directory, one or more members of the Dove Family
placed adverts of one kind or another, but prior to 1883, most of them had been half
or quarter pages consisting mainly of text but from 1883 onwards,
perambulators (or prams to most people) seem to play a large part of their business
as the ad’s now went to full page size.

The following adverts show how styles changed over a 30 year span.

The Glasgow Herald of 30th December 1944 carries a ‘Death’ Notice for a Donald Dove

In the same issue, his Obituary:

There would seem little doubt that each and every one of the Doves were related.

Sorting out who was who, who did what, who stayed where .....
just might be a project for the future!
